Music at St. John's

Music is an integral part of the worship and spiritual life of St. John's. It is diverse, inspired, and grounded in the rich Anglican heritage of music in the Episcopal Church. Music at St. John's reflects the variety and range of our liturgies, from Sunday morning Eucharist to festival services.

The central mission of the music program is to support the regular liturgies of the church. In addition, there are many liturgical events outside our primary celebration of the Eucharist. These have become a traditional part of the worship life at St. John's and also reach out to the community.

From its earliest roots, Anglican worship has been rich with song and hymnody supported by the pipe organ. St. John's is currently in the development of a new pipe organ. The builder will be announced in Spring 2010.

Also enhancing our worship through music is the St. John's Choir, widely recognized for its depth and breadth of repertoire and high standard of performance.

The St. John's Choir, consisting of adult volunteers and professionals, performs at the 11:00 am service every Sunday which include Rites I and II, Holy Eucharist and Morning Prayer on the last Sunday of the month. The choir also sings at numerous, Holy Week and special liturgies and at other events throughout the year. Adults interested in the choir should contact the Organist and Choirmaster, Samuel Carabetta. Telephone: 202-338-1796 x 202 or e-mail: samueljc@starpower.net.

With its simple elegance and excellent acoustics, St. John's is a frequent venue for many notable presentations of choral and chamber music. These events currently include:

A Festival of Hymns, Anthems and Readings
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
A Feast of Carols and Noels prior to the Christmas Eve Eucharist
Holy Week and Easter Day festival services with brass and tympani

St. Augustine has been quoted as saying, "He who sings, prays twice." At St. John's, the members of the congregation are enthusiastic in joining their voices with the choir to sing hymns and service music. This spirited union creates a joyful camaraderie in which we all share.
