Ministries

Ushers

The first smiling faces you see when attending services at St. John’s are our Usher and Greeter team! Ushers make sure everyone coming through our doors is handed a service bulletin, assist with the offering, the “traffic flow” during Communion, and answer questions for visitors and newcomers. Ushers should plan to arrive about 15 minutes before the service, and provide the support and hospitality that makes our worship and Sunday morning offerings a reality. Contact Laura for more
information.

Acolytes

You know the service is about to start when you see our acolytes gather at the back of the church with the cross. This is a great and fun ministry for our younger members and seasonal members alike.

Our acolytes make our services special. We love for all to have opportunities to participate in helping with our worship services! Contact Laura for more information.

Altar Guild

Our amazing Altar Guild takes care of all the items used in our worship services, preparing the church each Sunday, and for all special services. The Guild makes sure that everything is readied for each liturgical season. Members of the Altar Guild prepare and clean the altar area before and after a worship service. Altar Guild members should arrive early and expect to stay after to complete their very important ministry. Contact Patti Thorp to join the Altar Guild.

Flower Guild

Members of the Flower Guild work in two-person teams to arrange the flowers for Sunday service. Typically, this work is done on Friday or Saturday for the upcoming week. Contact Virginia Elgin to join the Flower Guild.

Parish Life

The Hospitality team helps out at parish events such as potluck suppers, special gatherings, and Sunday coffee hours. They help keep our restaurant-grade kitchen organized and stocked, and they even help out with cooking and prepping for special events. Contact Andrea Kramer for information.

Worship Ministers

These include lectors, lay eucharistic ministers, eucharistic visitors to the sick, homebound, and vergers. “Liturgy” actually means “work of the people,” so many lay members assist the clergy during worship. Public reading of scripture is an important part of our worship. Readers are provided a reading by email on Thursday or Friday in preparation for service on Sunday. Contact Laura if you are interested in being a worship minster

Liturgy Team

Our clergy and musicians enjoy brainstorming with parishioners for ideas to be incorporated in worship and the series of presentations and discussions we have throughout the year. This committee invites everyone to help form the ways in which we worship at St. John’s, whether in family-focused services, the music that we hear and sing, or special events that help us share God’s Light. Contact Laura for more information.

Adult Faith Formation

This dynamic ministry supports the lifelong process of finding and falling in love with God in the midst of our chaotic human lives. Adult Faith Formation also has as its purpose lessons and opportunities that support, nourish, and challenge adults as they explore their faith and relationships with God and fellow humans. We have meetings for bible study, book and movie discussions, race relations, and current events that impact us at local, state, national, and global levels. Contact Laura for more information.

Newcomer Committee

St. John’s is a welcoming place with a goal of bringing new members into our community. We rely on volunteers to reach out to prospective new members to share news about our church and community, and welcome them to join us for Sunday service or other events. If you are gifted as a welcomer, contact to be a part of the Newcomer Committee. Contact Sarah Duggin for more information.

Vestry

The Vestry is the group of elected leaders of the parish, with at least three people elected every year for two-year terms along with two wardens. The basic responsibilities of the vestry are to help define and articulate the mission of the congregation; to support the church’s mission by word and deed; to select the rector; to ensure effective organization and planning; and to manage resources and finances. Please refer to for a list of current Vestry members, and contact Senior Warden Alec Farr if you are interested in serving.

Stewardship Committee

Stewardship is more than a financial contribution, it is about giving up something that is precious which opens the heart to the needs of others. We are blessed with the tools and the community we need to learn and grow as disciples, and we are committed to sharing those blessings with others. A steward- ship campaign takes place every year at St. John’s and is led by a committee of people who want every member to participate. Without their work, much of the ministries we do would not happen. Contact Patti Thorp for more information.

Music at St. John’s

St. John’s Choir is an auditioned semi-professional choir who forms the heart of music at St. John’s. We sing music by Handel, Palestrina, Tallis, Dawson, Dove, and Bach as well as Anglican and plainsong chants. If you are interested or would like to learn more, please contact Director of Music, Aaron Goen for more information.

Panoply

St. John’s, Georgetown is committed to being a place of worship for all people – no exceptions. Panoply, the LGBTQIA2S+ and Allies ministry at St. John’s promotes education and programming around fellowship, inclusion and diversity. In addition to welcoming LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, families, and allies, into worship, parish life and outreach, Panoply creates educational programming for the parish and surrounding neighborhood with social gatherings, adult forums, entertainment events and social justice missions. They are the driving force behind PRIDE Month programming, and serve to witness, be and grow the love of Christ in the World. Panoply enjoys the fullest support from the Clergy, staff and congregation. For more information, please contact Mark Duer.
