James Warren, Associate for Music Ministry

James has been a parishioner at St. John’s for some 30 years, during which, at various times, he has served as Treasurer, Leader of the Stewardship Campaign and Chairman of the Organ Fund.   In addition to being a Vestry member for seven years, he is a preacher and organist.  He was appointed as a Diocesan Lay Preacher in 2012 and substitutes on occasional Sundays for the Director of Music.

Growing up in England, James moved permanently to the United States in 1986.  He graduated from Cambridge University in Classics and Middle Eastern Languages, and subsequently, after some years in international banking in London, New York and Germany, from Harvard Law School.  After working for several major law firms, he is now a partner in Potomac Law Group, PLLC, where he practices as a tax attorney, advising individuals, corporations and nonprofits.  He is the lawyer for King’s Academy, a co-ed boarding school in Jordan founded by H.M. King Abdullah II. For many years he has been a frequent traveler to the Middle East and Europe and has worked on several pro bono projects in different parts of Africa.

James is married to Stephanie Bothwell, a former House Tour Chair, and a landscape architect who looks after the Church’s exquisite front garden.  His younger daughter, parishioner Georgina Warren, works at the Library of Congress.  His elder daughter Caroline, a math and special education teacher in North Carolina, is the mother of his granddaughter Paige.
